Federal Mediator steps in to end NBA Lockout

NEW YORK: In an attempt to end a lockout, union chief Billy Hunter and officials of the National Basketball Association and its players union will meet Oct. 17 with a federal mediator.

As of today we agreed to meet on Monday with a federal mediator, Hunter, the National Basketball Players Association Executive Director, said on Mike Francesa’s radio show in New York.

The NBA canceled the first two weeks of the regular season, 100 games, when the two sides were unable to come to a agreement on a new labor accord. The 450 players in the league were locked out when the last deal expired on July 1, the season was scheduled to begin Nov. 1

Hunter didn’t disclose details of who will serve as mediator. George H. Cohen head of the mediation service, helped broker a labor accord for Major League Soccer in 2010.

Negotiations overseen in March of by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service in Washington, locked out players of the National Football League, when a agreement on how to divide about $9 million in revenue. The NFL came to a agreement in July, and saved the entire season.

David Stern, NBA Commissioner said the league’s 30 teams collectively lost about $300 million last season. However a more accurate figure would be $150 million, said Hunter.
