“We are delighted to have Afghanistan team in the tournament and their participation will add competition and thrill in the tournament”, said Khurram Haroon, Secretary, Punjab Rugby Association, while talking to state media here Wednesday.

He said the tournament will be played in two formats and in the seven-a-side competition a dozen of teams will display their skills and technique while in the other format, named as “grand final” two fifteen-a-side teams will show their sparkle.

Khurram, himself a former rugby player, is the organising secretary of the tournament which promises to produce a higher brand of rugby which is a fast growing sport in Pakistan, especially in Punjab.

Lahore will defend the title in the seven-a-side event, he said. “We have been supporting the cause of rugby in Afghanistan by training and grooming their coaches and the participation of Afghan team will help them gain vital experience and lift the level of their game”, he asserted.

He emphasised the need to have similar rugby exchange tours in the region to contribute in the overall development of the game.

“We have ample rugby talent and our teams have produced encouraging results in international events home and abroad and the way Rugby Union of Pakistan and PRA are working by contributing collective efforts we are optimistic of a future of this sport in Pakistan”, he said.
