Pakistan name squad for World Youth Scrabble Championship
KARACHI: Selection for the players to represent Pakistan at the World Youth Scrabble Championship (WYSC) concluded Saturday.
The championship will be played at Johor Bahru, Malaysia from 6-8 Dec 2011.
Pakistan Scrabble Association had earlier picked a group of top 26 players from a pool of more than 500 players that participated in various school level competitions throughout the year.
The final selection round was played between these top players. Players finishing at the first 8 positions in the final selection round will participate at the WYSC.
The 8 players selected are;
1- Shahzaib Khatri
2- Jahanzaib Khan
3- Inshal Shahbaz
4- Javeria Salman
5- Javeria A. Mirza
6- Talal Amjad
7- Minhaj Uddin
8- Taha ul Huda
Four of these have participated in the 2010 WYSC played at Manila, Philippines.
14 year old Inshal was the star of the event. Competing against more experienced players he dominated the tournament and came very close to winning it but stumbled at the last hurdle and finished 3rd.
Pakistan Scrabble Association is now looking for sponsors to be able to send the players for the world championship. There is a strong possibility that some of the players may miss out due to lack of funds. Said Tariq Pervez, Director youth program of Pakistan Scrabble Association.
“We are now looking for sponsors to be able to send the players for this World Championship of Youth. There is a strong possibility that some of the players may miss out due to lack of funds. PSA is ready to offer the professional expertise to promote the brands through their association with us. We suggest that this the widest opportunity for corporate to express their social responsibility for the segment which make them earn the most and are the future of Pakistan”, said M. Hassan Bin Azad, Director Marketing, Pakistan Scrabble Association.
