2011 IHF Super Globe: THW Kiel beat Ciudad Real to lift title
DOHA: The German club THW Kiel stopped Spanish club Renovalia Ciudad Real from completing their Super Globe titles hat-trick here Wednesday night when they won by 28-25 to clinch the 2011 IHF Super Globe crown.
The title came after a thrilling and an enthralling competition where both teams played their best game but it THW Kiel who came out as champion.
Ahead of a 3200 audience, the two European teams challenged each other with ferocious attacks, lethal attempts, and rock-solid defense but sheer excellence handed THW Kiel the title which their captain Marcus Ahlm received from IHF President Hassan Moustafa and Sheik Jawaan bin Hamad Al Thani.
It is important to mention here that this is the first-ever Super Globe title for the German handball club while their opponents had won the title on the last two occasions.
The two halves of 60 minutes game were in a complete contrast as Spanish club Ciudad Real dominated the first half while German THW Kiel came back strongly in the second.
Going into the halftime, Ciudad Real were leading by four goals and were looking in complete control and on course to complete the hat-trick of Super Globe titles. Kiel looked weaker in attack but their goalkeeper, Thierry Omeyer, was the only guy who stood resilient blocking at least 10 goals before the halfway mark.
On the other side, Ciudad Real were also thankful to their goalkeeper Arpad Sterbik who was a mountain to climb in the goal.
However, the German side entered into the court with a different frame of mind in the second half and seized control of the game in the space of only seven minutes where they scored seven consecutive goals to move to 17-15 as against the halftime score of 10-15.
But their worries were not dead as yet because the Spanish team then equalized the affair after World Handball Player of the Year, Filip Jicha from THW Kiel was shown Red Card for committing a foul against Guardiola.
The sentiments heated up and so as the action as the both teams tried their hard to take an edge over each other. Kiel calmed their nerves quickly to keep their focus in the game. Kiel captain, Marcus Ahlm, who is also the top scorer for German club in the tournament with seven goals, took responsibility of leading the team in style as he gave his side three goals advantage but that wasn’t the end of the game.
Ciudad Real continued to chase the leaders and fought real hard for every ball. They reduced the margin to only one goal in the dying moments before Omeyer, who was declared best goalkeeper of the tournament, once again blocked superbly to maintain the lead before Kim Andersson scored the 28:25 in the final minute to decide game in THW Kiel’s favor.
