Boston Marathon gets unofficial fastest runner ever

BOSTON: Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya rewrote the record books on Monday when he finished the Boston Marathon in the quickest two hours three minutes and only two seconds but his feat still wasn’t enough to be listed in the record books.

Mutai took almost a minute less than what Haile Gebrselassie did when he made the official world record of 2:03:59 at Berlin in 2008. However, his record won’t count as the official one because he was assisted by a tailwind on a hilly course with a little too much downhill from start to finish.

USA Track and Field told an international news agency, “Boston marathon performances cannot be ratified as world records as the course does not satisfy two of the criteria for world records”.

Mutai, who said he wasn’t in Boston to break the world record, was not the only one who smashed the record. His fellow countryman Moses Mosop, who was competing in his first international marathon, also broke the official world record as he finish the Boston Marathon in 02:03:06.

Mutai told reporters, “For me, today was good weather. And when you are in good form and get good weather and get some colleagues who can push you, you can make it.”

Third in the race was Gebregziabher Gebremariam, winner of the last year’s New York City Marathon, while Ryan Hall of America stood fourth.

Ryan Hall became the fastest American Marathon runner with his finish of 02:04:58. Ryan was ecstatic about his achievement as he told the media, “One thing I did learn last year is that I needed to keep them closer, so when they did surge I would keep my rhythm up a little bit”.
