China Open Boxing: Nisar leads Pakistan into quarterfinals

KARACHI: Pakistani boxers have started their campaigns in style at the China Open Boxing Championship 2011 here Sunday where Nisar Khan cruised into the quarterfinals with an emphatic victory over his Korean opponent in Guyang.

Sources in the Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) told The Sports Encounter correspondent here Monday that Nisar Khan defeated Korean Woo Sungjae in the opening round of the 75-kg category by 9-6 to set up a date with Liu Bing of China. The quarterfinal bout will be fought on Tuesday.

In the 64-kg bout, Pakistan’s Amir Khan, was given a bye in the first round that has pitted him against Sakenov Ermek of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinal to be played on Wednesday.

There was some disappointment as well for Pakistan on the opening day as Sardar Mohammad couldn’t prolong his stay in the championship after Jiang Genwi of China outclassed him in the first round bout of the 60-kg category by 9-5. Pakistani boxers will not be in action on Monday.

The best boxer in the Pakistani squad Mohammad Waseem will fight his first bout on June 1 (Wednesday).
