Lewis rates Klitschko above Haye
HAMBURG: Just a day ahead of the most-anticipated bout of the year, former British world champion boxer Lennox Lewis has put his weight behind Ukranian pugilist Wladimir Klitschko against British David Haye.
Lennox Lewis, who retired in 2003, said Friday that he wants David Haye to win the Saturday’s bout as a compatriot but his heart was telling him that the Ukranian giant would end victorious.
Lennox Lewis had a brilliant career during which he defeated Wladimir Klitschko’s elder brother Vitali Klitschko after he knocked out Mike Tyson in 2002. During the course of his career, Lewis got hold of both the WBC and IBF titles.
Lewis, 45, said that technically Klitschko is far better boxer than Haye as he has a better jab as well as experience and one of the best coaches in shape of Emanuel Steward. He added that despite of all the positives, David Haye still has in him what it takes to trouble the Ukrainian pugilist.
Lewis told a boxing website, “My heart says David, but my head says Wladimir. The reason is because Wladmir has a good jab, good experience and a great trainer in his corner. However, if there is one fighter who can unsettle him – and he has done already with what he’s been saying – it’s David Haye.
He added, “David has the talent and the punch power to knock him out. And to win I think he has to knock him out. If it goes to the judges, Wladimir will win the fight.”
Wladimir Klitschko, 35, is a brilliant boxer as he has recorded 49 knock-outs from 58 bouts and has only finished on the losing side three times in his career. Looking for his 50th knock-out, Klitschko has been terming David Haye as the elusive landmark.
