Morales next on list of Amir Khan
NEW YORK: After beating a 33-year-old IBF light welterweight champion Zab Judah (41-7, 28 KOs), who looked shot this weekend in a 5th round stop of questionable nature, IBF/WBA light welterweight champ Amir Khan (26 -1, 18 KOs) has now set his sights on another fighter in 34-year old Erik Morales (51-7, 35 KOs) in his next fight in December.
He could have gone for a rematch with Marcos Maidana, who really gave Amir Khan some serious problems last December in a life and death fight. Khan is going for a bout against Morales; an easy win is always on the cards.
It would have made a lot more sense to fight Maidana again, because the last time it was the fight of 2010. It would make for a real crowd pleaser, but Khan would rather go after an aging Erik Morales, who ran out of gas and was beaten by Maidana, and his right eye was so messed up, hopefully it’s going to be okay for his next fight with British fighter Anthony Crolla on September 17.
Khan really needs to fight Breidis Prescott, but Khan doesn’t want any part of him. Prescott knocked Khan out in the 1st round three years ago and Khan doesn’t even want to try and avenge the defeat. He’ll go after another old guy, and boxing fans will be none the wiser.
Khan’s win over an old Judah as a sign Khan is the best instead of realizing Judah had no business fighting Khan to begin with. Lucas Matthysse should have been the one facing Khan, but Matthysse can punch so it’s no surprise he didn’t get the fight.
The CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Richard Schaefer says Khan will face Morales in December in house Golden Boy fight. Morales and Khan are both with Golden Boy. Sadly Morales has little left and the casual boxing fan may think that Morales is the same fighter he once was and they’ll see Khan’s victory over Morales.
As a sign Khan is the best. It is a mismatch with Morales at 40 is not the same fighter he used to be. But then the fight may not happen, because Morales very well could be beaten by Crolla.
I doubt it though because Crolla will have to be really special to get a decision win over a famous fighter like Morales. During his comeback Morales got two questionable fights against Jose Alfaro and Francisco Lorenzo. It was thought Morales would lose both fights. Crolla may have to knock out Morales to get a win making Khan look even worse than he does now by taking on an aging Morales rather than Prescott, Matthysse, or Maidana.
