Povetkin grabs vacant WBA Heavyweight title
ERFURT, Germany: Russian ferocious boxer Aleksander Povetkin grabbed the vacant World Boxing Association (WBO) Heavyweight title on Saturday when a unanimous points decision in Erfurt, Germany gave him a right victory over his Uzbekistan opponent Ruslan Chagaev.
The Russian boxer, who is yet to be beaten in his professional career, extended his unbeaten streak to 22 including 15 knockouts as he never gave his opponent the big chance to steal the show and kept attacking him and wore him down with upper cuts and jabs.
Aleksander Povetkin, who was giving first shot to the world title, was in tremendous form and showed his mettle at the biggest stage with the confidence of winning it right from the word go.
The confident Povetkin told local media after clinching the WBO Heavyweight crown, “All the way through the fight, I felt I could win it”.
The Uzbek boxer, Chagaev, looked good in patches, especially in the middle rounds where he was able to hold his act together and upped the pressure on his Russian counterpart but Povetkin proved too hot to handle for him.
Povetkin used his brisk movement in the court coupled with great aggression to perfection as he handed the Uzbek his second career defeat, who once was WBA Heavyweight title holder before losing it to Wladimir Klitschko in 2009.
Wladimir Klitschko had to relinquish the WBA Heavyweight crown after he became the Association’s Super Champion when he had defeated British boxer David Haye in July.
The victory in Erfurt is a massive one for the Russian pugilist who can now get the chance to fight against the winner of the Vitali Klitschko-Tomasz Adamek WBC title fight to be held next month in Poland.
