KARACHI: Pakistan’s former boxing Olympian Syed Abrar Hussain Shah was gunned down by unknown terrorists in Quetta on Thursday when he was leaving Ayub Stadium.

Syed Abrar Hussain Shah, who was deputy director of Pakistan Sports Board (PSB), succumbed to a bullet wound in his head.

Abrar Hussain had represented Pakistan in 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and had clinched gold medal at the 1985 South Asian Games.

On his sad assassination, Federal Minister for Sports, Engr. Shaukat Ullah; Federal Secretary Sports, Mr. Abdul Ghaffar Soomro; Syed Amir Hamza Gilani; Director General Pakistan Sports Board and President of Pakistan Boxing Federation Mr Doda Khan Bhutto; Secretary General (PBF) Muhammad Akram Khan; Chief Minister Balochistan Nawab Aslam Raisani; Balochistan Governor Nawab Zulfikar Magsi, and Chief Minister Punjab Mr. Shahbaz Sharif expressed their grief.

All officers and staff of the Pakistan Boxing Federation, Pakistan Sports Board and all office bearers and members of Sports Journalists Association of Sindh (SJAS), Balochitan, Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Boxing Associations were at shock to have learnt about the brutal killing incident.

They offered sorrows and condolences to the bereaved family and prayed Almighty Allah to rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant the bereaved family courage to bear this irreparable loss with fortitude.

The 50-year-old Hussain, the Deputy Director of the Pakistan Sports Board, was shot four times and died after being taken to a nearby hospital. The motive of killing remains unclear.

Born on February 9, 1965 at Quetta. Currently working as Director, PSB Coaching Centre, Quetta. Holds Bachelor degree.

Responsible for administration and maintenance of PSB Coaching Centre, Quetta.

He was an eminent, agile and daring Boxer. Asian Gold Medallist in XI Asian Games held at Beijing (China), 1990. Participated three times in Olympic Games in 1984 (Los Angelus), 1988 (Seoul) and 1992 (Barcelona). Awarded Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Civil) in 1990. President, Islamic Republic of Pakistan awarded him President Gold Medal in 1991.

Attended Trainer Specialization Diploma in Merit of Coaching (Boxing) at Leipzig University(Germany) in 1994, Advance Boxing Coaching Course at Bangkok (Thailand) in 1994 and Olympic Solidarity Course in Boxing & Fitness Trainer B Licence, Euro Sports Organization at Halle (Germany) in 2002-2003.

Asian Boxing Confederation has nominated him as member in Coaches Commission at Asian level in April, 2011.
