South Africa recall Duminy for New Zealand tour

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa announced Wednesday to include JP Duminy for the next month’s tour to New Zealand.

Another left-hand batsman, Ashwell Prince failed to make into the squad but Duminy performed well enough to win the confidence of the selectors.

The last time JP Duminy had represented South Africans was in February 2010 against India and recent good performances in the shorter formats of the game proved enough to win back the confidence of selectors as he became the only change in the 15-man squad that played Sri Lanka in the recently-concluded Test series where South Africa won by 2-1.

In the One Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals squads, Justin Ontong has made a comeback at the age of 32 after a gap of about three and a half years. The last time he had represented South Africa in an ODI was in July 2008.

In a bid to prepare a team of fast bowlers, the South African selectors have given Marchant de Lange another go at the opposition batsman as he would continue his Test career which is just a match old. Richard Levei, an uncapped batsman, has also managed to sneak into the T20 squad.

CSA selection convener Andrew Hudson said in a statement issued Wednesday, “Ontong fully deserves this latest call-up. He has shown outstanding domestic form this season and I believe he has developed into a more mature cricketer. He is the complete limited overs package, being a fine batsman who will strengthen our fielding disciplines and also give us another bowling option.

Talking about the new guys in the team, Hudson said, “We have decided to try out some exciting new options in the T20 squad such as Levi, Ontong and De Lange. There are only 11 matches left in this format before we travel to Sri Lanka for the World Twenty20 and this is really the last chance to explore the talent we have at our disposal”.

South Africans are due to taken on New Zealand in three Twenty20 Internationals, three One Day Internationals, and three Test matches.

South African Test squad includes Hashim Amla, Mark Boucher, Marchant de Lange, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, Jacques Kallis, Morne Morkel, Alviro Petersen, Robin Peterson, Vernon Philander, Jacques Rudolph, Graeme Smith (capt), Dale Steyn, and Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

Proteas ODI squad has Hashim Amla, Johan Botha, JP Duminy, AB de Villiers (capt), Francois du Plessis, Jacques Kallis, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Justin Ontong, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Graeme Smith, Dale Steyn, and Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

South African T20 squad includes Hashim Amla, Johan Botha, Marchant de Lange, AB de Villiers (capt), JP Duminy, Colin Ingram, Richard Levi, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Justin Ontong, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Juan Theron, and Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
