The Stellar Warnie

The sun goes down on a spinning career for ‘Warnie’. The man who kept inspiring all the young cricketers for two decades finally quit the Game of Gentlemen when he spun his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Rajasthan Royals, to victory over Mumbai Indians the other day.

After a stellar cricket career which spans over 20 years, ‘Warnie’ has spun the ball for a final time, helping Rajasthan Royals to a 10 wickets victory over the highflying Mumbai Indians.

A capacity crowd at the Wankhede Stadium witnessed Warne’s last battle with fellow legend, Indian superstar Sachin Tendulkar. When Warne came out to bowl his third over,  Tendulkar had already been dismissed after being caught by Shane Watson at 3rd man.

Warne says, “It was great to finish in Mumbai with a big win, and I am very happy with the way I played”.

After the match, Sachin Tendulkar approached Warne and said, “It has been an honour and a privilege to play against you. I wish you all the best for the future.  You are a legend”.

Warne rejects any speculation of a comeback, instead focusing on some excellent business ventures. After his last professional game he stated, “I am no longer Shane Warne the cricketer. I am Shane Warne the business man, and I am happy with that”.

Here is a brief introduction of this leg-spinner who gave this form of bowling a new life in the early 1990s with that famous dismissal of the then England captain Mike Getting during the Ashes series. The leg-spin bowling changed completely after that dismissal and the art which was diminishing and on the decline in that era found a new ray of life as a lot more cricketers followed the path of Warnie to become good leggies and represented their countries with some success.
