Egypt beat Pakistan to win world squash crown
KARACHI: The top-seeded Egypt defeated Pakistan by 2-1 in the final to win the Men’s World Junior Team Squash Championship crown for the third time since 1994 in Quito on Sunday.
In the tenth consecutive victory, the new world individual champion from Egypt, Amr Khaled Khalifa, set the foundation for his team when he defeated Pakistan No.1 Danish Atlas Khan in straight sets by 11-3, 11-9, and 11-3.
16-year-old Nasir Iqbal, ranked 212, put smiles back on Pakistani faces with a hard-fought win against 114 ranked Ali Farag by 11-8, 6-11, 11-7, 2-11, 11-8 in a match that lasted for 65 long minutes. During the course, Nasir also put an end to unbeaten run for the Egyptian player.
The final was evenly balanced at 1-1 and all the eyes were on 17-year-old Egyptian squash player, Marwan El Shorbagy and his Pakistani opponent, Farhan Zaman, whom he defeated in the individual championship for the bronze medal.
In another tough and nail biting match, Marwan was able to defeated 18-year-old Farhan in four sets and 50 minutes long match with the score line of 11-5, 4-11, 11-9, 11-9 to help Egyptians take the team championship crown.
Canada defeated England 2-1 in the third place playoff while India got the better of New Zealand to clinch the fifth spot.
