Hamilton outpaced his fellow-Briton Button with a margin of 2.2 seconds, which was enough for him to take top spot at the standings. Spanish Fernando Alonso managed to cross the finish line third for the Ferrari to make it two McLaren drivers on the podium in Montreal.

Sebastian Vettel of Germany stood fourth while his Red Bull team mate Webber finished fifth after hell of a race.

Hamilton had praising words for his team after the race when he told them, “Woohooh! Yes! Great job guys! Thank you so much for this weekend. There was a lot of pressure on our shoulders, but we stood up to it.”

As Hamilton won the second race on the trot, it gave him 109 points to jump from third to first position at the championship standings, while Button remained unchanged at second position with 106 points and Webber slipped to third with 103 points, followed by Alonos and Vettel with 94 and 90 points respectively.

“It is one of the toughest races so far. It’s another one-two and Jenson did an incredible job. I am very happy and proud of the team,” said Hamilton.

“This is a special day for me because I obviously won my first Grand Prix here so to come back and do that three years later is a real pleasure.”

The last year’s champion, Button said, “It was a very difficult race. The tyres are so important and you are never sure if you are looking after them enough. It was a great race, really enjoyable – you had to think about every situation.”
