We do not need Sohail Abbas: Bajwa
LAHORE: Secretary Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Asif Bajwa has said that world record holder and penalty corner specialist Sohail Abbas will not be recalled for the Commonwealth games starting from 3rd October at New Delhi, India.
Sohail Abbas, who is the short corner specialist, holds the world record of scoring the highest international goals. Abbas by pass the team’s training camp for Europe tour last month and decided to play in Bangladesh hockey league without taking permission of PHF.
Abbas had a disappointing FIH Hockey World Cup earlier this year played in New Delhi where he failed to impress with his performance.
“We will not be inviting Abbas for the Commonwealth Games camp, we don’t need him anymore. The team showed improvement in Europe, where we achieved satisfactory results without Abbas. There were some notable changes in the team. The coach has brought positive changes and we are happy with his performance. Heuvel is currently in Netherlands and will be returning before the Abbottabad camp to supervise the team’s training. Heuvel will be back early next month to join the team and we are hoping for better results under him in the Commonwealth Games,” Bajwa said.
Pakistan hockey team played three matches against Spain in the Europe tour where all the matches ended in a draw. They beat France in the solitary match and drew two test matches series against the Netherlands during the tour.
