Pakistan cueists in Thailand for Snooker World Cup
BANGKOK: Pakistan’s snooker team landed in Thailand capital on Saturday to participate in the World Cup Team Snooker Championship starting from July 11.
Pakistani cueists, Mohammad Sajjad and Shahid Aftab – who have been included in the event as wild card, are placed a relatively easier pool in the World Cup Team Snooker Championship which will end on July 17 with 20 teams taking part in the seven-day competitions.
Apart from Pakistan, the Group A consists of Egypt, Germany, Ireland and Wales. After the initial round robin league, two top teams from each group will take on the other toppers in quarterfinals. Each match in the championship will include singles and doubles frames. Group B has China, Thailand 1, UAE, Malta and Australia; Group C includes England, Brazil, India, Belgium and Northern Ireland; and Group D consists of Scotland, Thailand 2, Afghanistan, Poland and Hong Kong.
Pakistan’s top cueist Muhammad Sajjad told Pakistan’s state news agency on Saturday that he was looking forward to the biggest tournament in the game.
He said, “This is very high class and tough team event with all the top professionals with in action with Asian cueist”.
He stated, “I have played against the best professionals and beaten few of them in past. But this will be new frontier for me”.
“I know the importance of this World team Cup and looking to deliver our best”, he added.
John Higgins of England is top favorite to win the title while the other favorites include England (Mark Selby and Ali Carter), China (Ding Junhui and Liang Wenbo) and Ireland (Ken Doherty and Fergal O’Brien).
The tournament organizers released the list of top eight seeds according to which Mark Williams of Wales and Mathew Stevens are top seeds, John Higgins and Stephen Maguire second seeds, England’s Mark Selby and Ali Carter third seeds, China’s Ding Junhui and Liang Wenbo fourth seeds, and Ireland’s Mark Allen and Gerrard Greene are fifth seeded in the tournament.
