Sajjad, Imran surge in World Snooker Championship


KARACHI: The Year 2010 has proved to be a good one for Pakistani sportsmen apart from cricket as two of the Pakistani cueists recorded their second victories in the ongoing IBSF World Snooker Championship in Damascus, Syria here Tuesday.
The Asian second best snooker player, Sajjad, once again showed his class and control over the snooker table as he outdid Alain Vandersteen of Belgium by four frames to two. Despite good bit of resistance, Sajjad kept his cool and won the opening frame but Vandersteen came back strongly to level the match at 2-2.
However, Sajjad, who lost in the last year’s world championship in Indian city of Hyderabad in the last-32 round, made no mistake this time completed the victory in style with the final score of 129-04, 29-76, 86-09, 42-73, 83-20, and 81-33.
In another match, another Pakistani player, Imran Shahzad, who is also Pakistan number one, exhibited more resounding form when he easily defeated Faaris Khan of South Africa by four frames to one.
It is important to mention here that the current tournament is Imran’s only second international event. However, he showed no nervous energy and kept his control over the emotions and cue to outscore his opponent by 67-40, 95-08, 46-60, 109-60, and 89-18.
After some readjustments in the schedule by the IBSF, Muhammad Sajjad will now take on Janne Hakkinen of Finland, Sohail Shahzad will play against Lin Tan Ho of Hong Kong, while Imran Shahzad will face off with Franz Stahli of Switzerland on Thursday.
