Arsenal, Man City ease into FA Cup quarterfinals
LONDON: Arsenal heralded their return to form with a goal feast against Leyton Orient while Manchester City kept showing their class with a 3-0 victory against Aston Villa to confirm them berths in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup here Wednesday night.
Stoke City will face West Ham United while Birmingham Cit will play Bolton Wanderers in the other two quarterfinals.
Arsenal showed no respite to Leyton Orient as the Gunners outplayed them by 5-0, thanks to a super hat-trick by Nicklas Bendtner, a performance which was in contrast to their shock defeat to Birmingham City in the League Cup final.
After this victory, the Gunners will now take on Manchester United in a voluptuous and mouth-watering quarterfinal clash
Arsenal took lead right in the beginning with Marouane Chamakh scoring in only the seventh minute of the replay after the third tier Orient held on to 1-1 draw in the first game.
Bendtner soon doubled the lead with the Gunners’ 100 goal of the EPL 2010-11. Crowd initially remained silent but The Emirates came back to life after the first two goals in a short period of time.
“It was important we came back from Sunday’s defeat with a win,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told reporters. “We are having a fine run apart from Sunday’s defeat which came under special circumstances. But we played very well tonight.”
Bendtner scored his second goal just before the halftime whistle. He once again came to complete his hat-trick through a goal on penalty kick in the 62nd minute. The rout was completed by Gael Clichy who hit the ball with his left food into the net just 15 minutes before the final whistle.
In another match, Manchester City also easily evaded Aston Villa by 3-2 to set up quarterfinal clash against Reading, who defeated Everton on Tuesday.
Just like Arsenal, Manchester City also took control of the game in the initial minutes as Yaya Toure opened the scoring feast with a goal from a corner in only the fifth minute of the match.
Mario Balotelli doubled the lead which was tripled by David Silva in the 70th minute.
