Chelsea start title defence in style

LONDON: Defending Champions, Chelsea Football Club, got their English Premier League title defence off the mark in great style as they punished an unimpressive West Bromwich Albion (WBA) by six goals to nil at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Didier Drogba scores the first hat-trick of the English Premier League 2010-11

The main goal scorer for Chelsea was none other than Didier Drogba who scored the first hat-trick of the competition and the season. Florent Malouda struck in the sixth minute that set the tone for the rest of the match as Frank Lampard also opened his account for the new EPL season. Malouda scored his second goal of the evening that took Chelsea’s tally to 21 goals in their last three home games.

Despite the great start to Chelsea’s title defence, the show on Saturday was stolen by the seaside soccer club Blackpool who celebrated the end of their 39 years wilderness in great passion as they routed Wigan Athletic by four goals to nil.

Joe Hart saves the day for Tottenham Hotspur on first day of the English Premier League 2010-11

In the first match of the 2010-11 season of the Barclays English Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur held Manchester City to a goalless draw at White Hart Lane as both teams started their campaign with eyes set on the EPL Crown. Man of the Match was Hotspur’s goalkeeper, Joe Hart, whose acrobatic saves actually saved the day for the hosts.

In another match of the day one, Aston Villa shrugged off the shock of their manager, Martin O’Neil’s resignation and played to their optimum level that earned them an easy three-nil victory over West Ham United. James Milner, who is all set to sign up with Manchester City during the current week, appeared for one last time for the Aston Villa and made it memorable by scoring the third goal.

Fulhan and Bolton Wanderers had to contend with only one point each after a goalless draw; Birmingham City managed to score a late equaliser against a 10-man Sunderland to end with two-two draw; Wolverhampton Wanderers showed no generosity when they hosted Stoke City and defeated them by two goals to one; and Blackburn Rovers started the fresh season on a high with a 1-0 victory over Everton.

Blackpool record smashing win on their return to Barclays English Premier League.

Sunday is another action-packed day at the EPL kick-off as Liverpool are hosting Arsenal today while Manchester United are due to entertain New Castle United on Monday.
