The stars for the home side were Florent Malouda and Salomon Kalou who scored the two goals for the Chelsea who are now well placed five points clear of the Manchester City.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side lacked fluency in the initial moments of the clash but still dominated the proceedings for the best part of the match, during which Malouda scored his seventh goal of the season in the 23rd minute of the encounter.
The victory was sealed in the 81st minute by Kalou who came as a substitute to provide the impetus to the goal-scoring spree of Chelsea that has started to tame in recent matches.
A rather unhappy Ancelotti told journalists, “It was a tough game because we didn’t play so well. We suffered from some dangerous situations in the first half and in the second half we conceded too many shots from distance. We could have closed the game before the second goal, we had a lot of chances, but we didn’t play as well as we usually do.”
Manchester City, who enjoy second position at the table, are due to meet Arsenal later today. They can cut down the Chelsea lead to two points only by winning against the Gunners.
Tottenham Hotspur surged to third position, just seven points behind Chelsea and two points adrift Manchester City, after Rafael van der Vaart scored his fifth goal for the north London club in just his seventh appearance.
West Bromwich Albion had no let up to their dream start to the season as they did enough damage against Fulham when they defeated them by two goals to one to steal the fourth place.
In another match of the Saturday evening, Birmingham City got the better of Blackpool as they defeated the newly promoted club by a clear margin of 2-0.
Sunderland managed to save their skins against Aston Villa with a one-goal victory while Wigan Athletic had to settle with a 1-1 home draw against Bolton Wanderers.
Newcastle United forced the West Ham United to right to the bottom with 2-1 victory.
Manchester United (Red Devils) now find themselves in the sixth place as they would play Stoke City in a bid to shrug off the earlier setbacks of the season on Sunday. With Wayne Rooney deciding to stay at the Old Trafford, there are huge chances that a renewed Manchester United would play their best game in the away match.
In the third match of Super Sunday, Liverpool are due to take on Blackburn Rovers at their backyard.
