FA Cup 2011: Manchester City win FA Cup title – Highlights
LONDON: The Manchester City won their first title since 1969 when they defeated Stoke City by 1-0 to clinch the FA Cup 2011 crown on a big Saturday.
The title has ended a 35-year wait for Manchester City and Yaya Toure had all the credit for accomplishing the feat who scored the only goal of the FA Cup final after 74 minutes of the match.
City kept good control over the proceedings all throughout the match and never allowed Stoke City to dictate terms who were playing in the final for the first time.
It is important to mention here that the Ivorian Yaya Toure had also scored a vital goal against Manchester United in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
Although, City were on top of their game but desperate defending by Stoke City kept them at bay as they managed to find net only once. However, that only goal was enough to win them their fifth FA Cup title and first since 1969.
Manchester City have already booked them the Champions League qualifiers berth for the first time in their history and victory in the FA Cup final is just icing on the cake for their owner Sheikh mansour bin Zayed bin Al Nahyan from Abu Dhabi who not only just bought the club in 2008 but also put huge sum of 487.6 million US dollars on getting big names in the team.
A delighted coach of Manchester City, Robert Mancini told reporters, “We won the FA Cup. It is an important trophy. We need to improve more to do another step but it was important to start to win because when you start to win, afterwards everything will be easier”.
On the flip side, Stoke City manager Tony Pulis said, “We’ve reached a level of performances over the last six or seven weeks. The greatest disappointment is that today we have not reached that level. They are disappointed with themselves for not reaching that level. Manchester City were the better team. They deserved to win the game.”
Mancini said, “We want to try to match United. We have got to the Champions League, that was our first target and we won the FA Cup. It is very important for this club.”
