Forlan to persist with Atletico

CAPE TOWN: Diego Forlan has ended all the rumours regarding his comeback to English Premier League and said that he is more than happy to play for Atletico Madrid. Forlan said that he has no plan to join English club Tottehham.

Uruguay striker is in prime form as he inspired his team to the semi finals of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2010 and he is also expected to play important role in Uruguay semi final match against Netherlands today. Forlan had a miserable two seasons with Sir Alex Fergusons Manchester United where he only managed to score 17 goals. Forlan was transferred for £2 million to Villarreal, where he had a successful season and he won the Pichichi for La Liga’s top scorer in 2004.

Forlan replaced Fernando Torres who moved to Liverpool in 2007, in Atletico Madrid for £15 million where he again won the Pichichi for becoming top scorer in second season.

“I feel I have nothing to prove at all, my scoring rate in La Liga speaks for itself. My average is well over a goal in two games, and in the toughest league in the world, it speaks for itself. Tottenham are a club who are going in the right direction, but I have no interest in joining the Premier League with any club. For a start, Spain is much hotter and also it is my home now,” Forlan said while talking to media.

“We have a great team at Atletico and next season we will be aiming for a top-four finish. We have some very exciting young players and I am excited for the season. I will never play in England again, but I still actually look back with fond memories at some moments. I was very young at Manchester United, and I feel that I was just starting to find my feet when I was sold and Rooney was brought in. If we had been paired together I think we could have formed the most devastating strike partnership in Europe, but it wasn’t to be,” he added.
