Lightning Rooney hits hat-trick, takes United 8 points clear
LONDON: Wayne Rooney heralded his return to form with a solid hat-trick against West Ham United here Saturday which also helped English Premier League (EPL) leaders Manchester United to stretch their lead to eight points at the top.
The hat-trick came just at the right time for the Red Devils as they were trailing against West Ham United but eventually managed to take win by 4-2.
United were 2-0 down in just after first 25 minutes of the match and had no one to blame but poor defense by Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic handed West Ham United two penalties and midfielder Mark Noble made no mistake in obliging the sloppy defenders.
West Ham United were leading by 2-0 at halftime stage and Red Devils needed special measures to undo the initial damage.
Sir Alex Ferguson went proactive and introduced Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov which sparked a positive energy in the field. When the going got tough, it proved just the perfect opportunity for Wayne Rooney to show what bigger player he is as he reduced the deficit with a curling free kick before equaling the odds through his low drive.
Soon, Rooney completed his hat-trick by scoring his third goal in 14 minutes and then Javier Hernandez completed the rout with a well-scored goal from a very remote range.
With this victory, Manchester United have extended their lead to eight points as they have secured 66 points from 31 matches while Arsenal have 58 points but they have played two games less than the EPL toppers.
