Liverpool punish Oldham 5-1 in FA Cup 3rd round
LONDON: Liverpool continued their challenge in the FA Cup 2012 with an impressive victory over Oldham Athletic on Friday as Andy Carroll came up with his first goal of the current season at Anfield.
Liverpool scored five goals against the one by the League 1 (third division) Oldham Athletic to storm into the fourth round of the FA Cup 2012.
Liverpool had bought Andy Carroll, who also represent England in international circuit, for 35 million pounds or 53.93 million US dollars from Newcastle United in January last year, proved his selection right almost a year after his transfer as he chipped in with a beautiful goal just before the stoppage time.
The Oldham Athletic took the lead in 28th minute when Robbie Simpson produced a classical goal striking the ball from 25 meters but Liverpool struck back strongly with an immediate reply by Jonjo Shelvey whose shot deflected off Craig Bellamy into the corner of the goalpost.
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard continued to lead from the front after a tumultuous Year 2011 hit by several injuries as he propelled his side to a 2-1 lead going into the halftime by safely placing the penalty kick into the net.
Craig Bellamy then upped energy level which resulted in the third goal for the home team in the 68th minute before Andy Carroll produced his third goal of the season, first at home, with a clinical finish.
That was not all as Stewart Downing put icing on the cake well into the stoppage time striking the fifth goal of the evening to make it an absolutely successful night for the Liverpool
The FA Cup action will continue on Saturday but the top Manchester sides will relive their rivalry on Sunday at 1300 GMT as Manchester United will be looking to rise from their two-game losing streak while Manchester City will be up to dent the reigning English Premier League champions.
