Manchester United extend lead to four points
LONDON: Javier Hernandez increased the Red Devils confidence ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool clashes as he extended the Manchester United lead to four points with his double strike against Wigan on Saturday night.
Hernandez was included in the playing eleven preferred over Berbatov which was quite rare with Hernandez and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Hernandez scored the opening goal for United only in the 16th minute of the match. The score was 1-0 at half time as Wigand denied Red Devils to extend their lead in the first half.
Manchester United’s goal keeper Edwin van der Sar was in prime form as he brilliant outstanding at least on three occasions and denied Wigan to open their account against the chart leaders. Hernandez doubled the lead in the 74th minute of the match as United players started to feel more confident and comfortable.
Sir Alex Ferguson has now declared that the fight for EPL winner is now among only two teams i.e. Manchester United and Arsenal as no other team now can disrupt their positions. The star English striker Wayne Rooney scored the third goal for Manchester United in the 83rd minute of the match while Da Silva made it 4-0 in the 86th minute as Manchester United completed their thumping victory.
The victory will give bundle of confidence to the Red Devils as they have two big matches to play against Liverpool and Chelsea. Sir Alex Ferguson was happy with his team performance and said, “It’s a good result because this is a difficult place to come. For the first 20 minutes, Wigan were terrific. We played really well in the second half and had some fantastic opportunities.”
Roberto Martinez was disappointed on the result and said, “You could see what Man Utd wanted to do. They wanted to impose themselves on James McCarthy. If we are going to geta result against them, you need the big calls to go your way. That didn’t happen.”
In other matches played on Saturday, Wolverhampton Wanderers defeated Blackpool by 4-0 while Everton beat Sunderland 2-0. The match between Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers ended in a 1-1 draw. Aston Villa defeated Blackburn Rovers by 4-1.
On Sunday, West Ham United will take on Liverpool while Manchester City will play against Fulham.
