Manchester United in search of clean sheet

MANCHESTER: Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United are raring to go against the Spanish soccer club Valencia in a bid to score another clean sheet.

The clean sheet would provide the Red Devils an exclusive record of becoming the first soccer club ever to enter the Champions League group stage without giving any goal scoring opportunity to their opponents.

Manchester United are due to take on Valencia in their final first round match of the Champions League on Tuesday.

The Red Devils have failed to stop the English soccer clubs from scoring goals but they have exhibited some tough defense against the European clubs maintaining the clean sheet uptil now.

Will Manchester United leave behind the West Ham rout?

The only importance for this dead-rubber match is the Red Devils getting closer to an exclusive record as both the teams have already booked their berths in the knockout stages of the competition. However, the top position of the Group C would be decided after this last game.

Manchester United are comfortably leading the Group C with 13 points from their five matches so far while Valencia follow with 10 points from their five games. In the event, if Manchester United lose this last match, Valencia could take the top position and enter into the next stage with some confidence.

Another dilemma for Sir Alex Ferguson is the upcoming titanic clashes against Arsenal and Chelsea at the Barclays English Premier League in the next two weeks and therefore he has been giving good bit of chances to his younger players who have come up to his expectations lately.

Talking about a talented pool of youngsters, Wes Brown told the Manchester United’s official club magazine ‘Inside United’, “We have some fantastic young players at the back. You could play a good back five with some of them in there; Ben Amos in goal, Rafael at right back, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling in the centre and Fabio at left back. That is the next generation.”

Despite of abundance of talent, Manchester United’s 29-match unbeaten streak came to an end last week when West Ham United routed the young Red Devils by 4-0 in the League Cup encounter.

Manchester United have got a great chance to rewrite history books yet again if they go to the next stage without even conceding a single goal. The previous record is of conceding one goal which is shared by Ajax Amsterdam, Chelsea, Juventus (twice), Liverpool, AC Milan and Villarreal.
