Manchester United maul New England Revolution 4-1 in US tour opener
BOSTON, Massachusetts: The English Premier League Champions Manchester United kicked off their pre-season United States tour in style on Wednesday with a comfortable victory over New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium.
Federico Macheda scored twice while Michael Owen and Park Ji-Sung scored once to see off New England Revolution in a comfortable manner.
Ashley Young, who made his debut for the Red Devils in the match, found his new club an easier one to get settled as he told the US media that he felt at home in his new club’s outfit and with a victory in the first outing things seemed going great for him ahead.
Ashley Young has represented England in 15 international matches and was roped in by Sir Alex Ferguson from Aston Villa last month for a free around 17 million pounds or 27.4 million US dollars.
Young remained in the field for 67 minutes in a right-wing position and now he is in competition with the likes of Nani and Antonio Valencia for inclusion in the Manchester United starting eleven.
Talking about the pressure of representing Manchester United, Ashley Young said, “No, there weren’t any nerves. I’ve gone into the game as I normally do, playing the normal same way. I’ve done that again Wednesday. I wasn’t nervous at all. It’s a pre-season game and about fitness and I’ll build on this. Of course, it’s always a nice feeling putting on a Manchester United shirt.”
Michael Owen put on exhibition his goal-scoring skills in front of the huge American audience at Gillette Stadium when he gave Manchester United the lead in the 50th minute before Macheda scored twice to seal the game.
Kenny Mansally pulled one back for the New England Revolution but a scintillating goal by Park Ji-Sung maintained United’s three goal advantage.
Sir Alex Ferguson talked about his latest inclusion in the side as he said, “Right wing was his position with Aston Villa until last season, when they started playing him in behind the strikers — Gabriel Agbonlahor or Darren Bent — in a more advanced role, like the way we use Wayne Rooney. His capabilities are such that he can play wide left, he can play in behind the strikers and he can play wide right. He showed tonight he’s a fantastic crosser of the ball.”
This was Manchester United’s first match after their 3-1 defeat against Barcelona in the Champions League final at Wembley in May and a good start what made Wayne Rooney to talk upbeat about the future.
The Red Devils striker said, “You have to draw a line under what happened at Wembley. You have to look forward, not back. We won the Premier League and we need to look forward at the trophies we will be competing for. We have an exciting young team now and hopefully we can bring more success to the club.”
Manchester United have three more games up their sleeves with the next encounter against Seattle Sounders on July 20.
