Manchester United thrash MLS All-Stars 4-0
HARRISON, NJ: The Manchester United made the mockery of the Major League Soccer All-Stars at Red Bull Arena here Wednesday as they flexed their muscle ahead of their match against Barcelona with a 4-0 victory at the 2011 MLS All-Star game.
Manchester United had earlier defeated the MLS All-Stars by 5-2 and this time the best US soccer stars were hoping to make a good match of the British footballers but once again the English Premier League champions proved a little too hot for them to handle.
The MLS All-Stars managed to keep a lid on the Red Devils strikers for the first 20 minutes but then the United forwards started finding opportunities where Anderson opened the scoring while Park Ji-Sung doubled it just before the halftime.
There was a lot more to come in the second half where Dimitar Berbatov started the proceedings with third goal of the match before Danny Welbeck made it 4-0 for the Red Devils in the 68th minute.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson praised the way MLS All-Stars played in the initial moments of the match. He told the press conference, “I think it was a tighter game than the score line showed for the first half. I think the MLS team was more dangerous than us.”
On the other hand, head coach of the MLS All-Star team, Hans Backe said, “Even if you lose 4-0, I can say I’m quite pleased with the performance. The first half is a very, very even first half. Possession-wise it’s, I don’t know, 50-50. I understand that sounds strange when you lose 4-0, but I have the feeling that we deserved better.”
Park Ji-Sung was methodical right throughout his stay in the middle and was deservedly declared Man of the Match. However, both camps had praise for the former Manchester United captain David Beckham. Ferguson said, “I thought David Beckham did really well. Thirty-six years of age, he showed great energy”.
MLS head coach was of the view, “I think David was phenomenal. He’s so, so competitive. Being around the world, playing still very hungry.”
