Manchester United vs Arsenal: Red Devils book FA Cup SF berth
LONDON: In one of the most anticipated encounters of the current season, Manchester United outplayed their arch-rivals Arsenal by two goals to nil in quarterfinal of the FA Cup at Old Trafford here Saturday.
With this victory, Sir Alex Ferguson and his Red Devils have kept their hopes of winning three titles in the current season alive as they are still leading the Barclays English Premier League (EPL) table despite of poor last couple of matches.
Fabio da Silva opened the scoring for Manchester United in the first half which was befittingly completed by Wayne Rooney in the second half giving the impressive London soccer club a great confidence tonic ahead of their Champions League last-16 second leg against Olympique Marseille at the same venue where they routed The Gunners.
With this loss, it seems that Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal have lost their way completely after their defeat to the hands of Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday night. It is important to mention here that The Gunners lost to Birmingham City in the final of League Cup last month, so all of their hopes are now associated with the EPL where they have closed in the gap against Manchester United.
In the other quarter-final played on Saturday, Bolton Wanderers were able to defeat Birmingham City by 3-2. The semi-final line-up would be completed after Sunday’s two more quarter-finals where Manchester United would host Reading while West Ham United will visit Stoke City.
This is only the second time in the history of the FA Cup that Bolton Wanderers have qualified for the FA Cup semi-final. The last time when they made it to the last-four they won the FA Cup title in 1958.
