Owen fires as United beat Southampton in FA Cup
LONDON: Manchester United came from behind to defeat Southampton by two goals to one in their FA Cup fourth round match at Saint Mary’s on Saturday despite Sir Alex Ferguson resting most of his senior strikers.
In absence of Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen and Javier Hernandez took the responsibility of scoring goals as Richard Chaplow scored Southampton’s only goal in the last minute of the first half.
Richard’s goal took Southampton fans in 1976 Cup final match where they had defeated the Red Devils.
However, it was time for the second string Manchester United strikers to shine as Michael Owen equalized in the 65th minute through a head.
The lead was doubled later in the match as he converted a pass by substitute Ryan Giggs.
In the earlier matches, Crawley Town became the first minor league team in 17 years to qualify for the fifth round of the Cup when they beat Torquay by one goal to nil.
Defending English Premier League Champions, Chelsea Football Club were held by Everton by 1-1.
