Premier League: Arsenal keep title challenge alive

LONDON: As Manchester United continued the winning streak, Arsenal kept the pressure on the front-runners with a 3-1 victory over Blackpool at Bloomfield Road on Sunday.

The Arsenal’s victory cut short the lead for Manchester United by three points as the Red Devils still placed seven points clear at the top.

The highlight of the match was Jens Lehmann, 41, who found himself guarding the Arsenal goal for the first time in three years and he did just the perfect job for the Gunners.

The Arsenal FC have been struggling with a goal-keeper crisis and Lehmann, who had left the Gunners three years back, came out of retirement just a month ago to fill up the spot and was included in the final team after Almunia got himself injured in the warm-up.

Arsenal went 2-0 up after 21 minutes as Abou Diaby and Emmanuel Eboue struck crucial goals for the visitors. However, Blackpool got one back when Gary Taylor-Fletcher scored in 52nd minute in quite weird circumstances as the 41-year-old goalie challenged him in the penalty area but referee kept the play going which gave Gary the chance to score the goal. Blackpool tried their best for the equaliser but it never came their way.

Arsenal then completed the victory in the 76th minute when the trio of Cesc Fabregas, Theo Walcott and Robin Van Persie teamed up to produce a beautiful goal, thanks to the finishing touch by Van Persie.

With this victory, the Gunners now have 62 points, just seven points behind Manchester United who are comfortably placed at 69 points. On the other side of the EPL standings, Blackpool find themselves just a point above the relegation zone.
