Premier League: Manchester United clinch record 19th title – Highlights
LONDON: Wayne Rooney converted a controversial penalty as Manchester United drew their match against Blackburn Rovers and with it clinched the record 19th English Premier League title here Saturday.
Manchester United went into this match needing only one point to win the illustrious 19th Premier League title and no wonder their players were nervous.
BlackBurn Rovers capitalized on the visitors’ nervousness and Brett Emerton gave the hosts one goal advantage in the 20th minute of the match. Manchester United tried their best to get over the lead and tried several things but will ball hitting goalpost and off-target strikes added to their frustration. It was not before 73rd minute when Red Devils were awarded a penalty. Rooney scored off the penalty which resulted after referee Phil Dowd had to consult with linesman following Blackburn keeper Paul Robinson appeared as if he clattered Javier Hernandez thus sending him sprawling.
The proceedings went bitter after the call as players from both sides exchanged hot words but Rooney took everything out of his mind while taking penalty and dodged goalkeeper easily to give United their 12th title since 1992-93 when Premier League came into began. Overall, it was Manchester United’s 19th title and crossed Liverpool with whom they had been sharing the record for the past couple of seasons.
At English Premier League Points Table, Manchester United now have 77 points their 37 matches and are clearly ahead of Chelsea whom they defeated on previous weekend. Chelsea have 70 points with only two games to play.
The Saturday is a huge day for English soccer as for the first time since 1951 the top division games were played on the same day as Manchester City were taking on Stoke City in the FA Cup final.
In the relegation zone battle, Blackpool won a thriller against Bolton Wanderers 4-3 but victory did little to lift them out of the relegation zone as they are still languishing at the last place.
Their pathetic situation was also a result of Wolves victory over Sunderland by 3-1. As far as Blackburn Rovers are concerned, the draw against Manchester United is good enough to take them above the relegation zone as West Bromwich Albion edged out Everton 1-0.
