Premier League: Manchester United held to a draw at Newcastle
LONDON: Manchester United spared a number of chances and with it the chance to go nine points clear on Tuesday night when Newcastle United held them to a goal-less draw which slowed their progress towards winning Barclays English Premier League 2011 title.
It seemed the defeat against Manchester City in the semi-final of the FA Cup was still playing in the minds of the Red Devils as they missed number of chances. All of the top strikers missed goals from a striking distance as Manchester United failed to force the issue at Saint James Park.
Manchester United now have 70 points with five games still to be played and are seven points clear on the top of the table with Arsenal following at 63 points and Chelsea at 62 points with both of them have six games under their belt.
Newcastle United played a defensive game locking all avenues to score goals but Manchester United’s potent strikers including Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Ryan Giggs came so close of breaking the deadlock but lacked the finishing touch.
Surprisingly enough, it was Newcastle United who enjoyed ball possession for the best part of the match and their strikers also squandered some of the scoring chances including a misdirected header by Peter Lovenkrands.
