Premier League: Toppers United cruise to 10 points lead
LONDON: Manchester United put the loss of Wayne Rooney behind to thrash Fulhan by 2-0 in an important fixture of the Barclays English Premier League on Saturday.
The victory has given Manchester United a health lead of 10 points at the top of the EPL league table.
Wayne Rooney was banned for two matches by the Football Association (FA) earlier this week for uttering harsh words on TV camera after completing his hat-trick in the match against West Ham United.
Sir Alex Ferguson gave his top players a break and tested his bench strength ahead of their home leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea on Tuesday.
While the Red Devils faced no real resistance by Fulham, they managed to score two goals in the first half by Dimitar Berbatov and Antonio Valencia which proved enough for the Rooney-less side at Old Trafford.
After this victory, Manchester United now have 69 points, 10 points clear of Arsenal who are visiting Blackpool on Sunday. Arsenal have 59 points with two games in hand which gives United a clear advantage as the EPL is heading towards its end.
Chelsea defeated Wigan Athletic by 1-0 to move just one point away from Arsenal at 58 points. Florent Malouda scored the only goal of the match in the 67th minute at Stamford Bridge.
In an important clash on Sunday, Manchester City are visiting Liverpool where a victory would give them the chance to clinch the number two position. Manchester City now have three more points than Tottenham Hotspurs who secured a hard-fought victory over Stoke City by 3-2 on Saturday.
Sir Alex Ferguson was excited as a kid talking about the game against Fulham as he told Sky Sports, “It was an important win and at this stage of the season that’s the name of the game. We didn’t play well, we were a bit wasteful with our possession in the second half. We had great opportunities to add to the goals but we didn’t take them and we had to hang on a little bit at the end.”
