Red Devils off the mark in style

OLD TRAFFORD: Manchester United kicked off their Premier League campaign in style as they beat New Castle United convincingly by 3-0 on Monday evening.

It was Dimitar Berbatov who scored the opening goal in the fresh EPL season for Manchester United in the 33rd minute. Darren Fletcher doubled the lead in the 41st minute of the match as Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United was comfortably placed by 2-0 at half time.

Veteran winger Ryan Giggs, who came as substitute in the 71st minute replaced Nani, scored the third goal of Manchester United in the 85th minute of the match and maintained his unique record of scoring goals for Red Devils in every season. The highlight of the match was Paul Scholes who was brilliant in the midfield for Manchester United and set up two goals.

It was a great start for Manchester United in the new EPL season but the only disappointment for Sir Alex Ferguson was another blank day for his star striker Wayne Rooney as he again failed to score. This was the 13th goal-less match for Rooney including the matches he played in 2010 FIFA World Cup.

After the match, Paul Scholes told media “the most important thing is to win the game. Maybe we could have scored more but we’ll take a 3-0 win on the first day of the season. Newcastle came, set their stall out and defended deep. Once we got the goal we were a constant threat.

“A lot of teams come here and try to make it difficult. We just had to tire them out as much as we could. Second half especially, I really enjoyed that: creating chances, looking like we were going to score whenever we went forward,” he added.

Ferguson was also happy over impressive show by Scholes and said “He showed at his age, you don’t lose what he’s got: passing, vision, and he’s still got a good appetite for the game. The game needs that. There are plenty of good players in our country. Sometimes we beat ourselves up about the standard but there’s plenty of good in it.”

“We were wasteful with some chances. Dimitar Berbatov could have scored three or four, but his performance was excellent. The three points is always important in your first home match. For most of the game we controlled it, we passed the ball well at times. It was a steady performance,” Fergie added.
