Rooney out of Europa League encounter against Ajax Amsterdam

MANCHESTER (The Sports Encounter), February 22, 2012: Manchester United were dealt a major blow Wednesday when the team management announced that their star striker Wayne Rooney wouldn’t be available for the top English Premier League club for their Europa League match against Ajax Amsterdam.

Wayne Rooney picked up a throat infection during the first leg of the Europa League fixture against Ajax Amsterdam last week and since then he has been trying to recover from the illness, Alex Ferguson told reporters here.

Despite of bad throat, Wayne Rooney did make sure his presence at the club’s training on Wednesday but the team management decided against making him play in the Thursday’s encounter in a bid to help him recover for the English Premier League match against Norwich City on Sunday.

Talking about Wayne Rooney, Sir Alex Ferguson told reporters, “Wayne is out tomorrow. He has a really bad throat. There were traces of it in Amsterdam and we gave him some medication but it got worse. He has been in bed over the weekend and came in today for the first time and we are trying hard to get him right for Sunday.”

The Manchester United are very much right in avoiding taking any chances with Rooney as they are leading Ajax Amsterdam 2-0 after first leg of the Europa League competition.

In case, the Red Devils make it to the last 16, they may get either Lokomotiv Moscow or Athletic Bilbao as their opponents.
