Rooney to miss FA Cup Semi-Final against City
LONDON: The key striker of Manchester United, Wayne Rooney, will miss Red Devils’ FA CUP Semi-Final against arch-rivals Manchester City as the regulatory commission has kept the two-match ban on him following his act of swearing into a TV camera.
Rooney is going to miss the home game against Fulham on Saturday as well as the FA Cup Semi-Final to be played at Wembley on April 16.
Wayne Rooney couldn’t put a lid on his excitement of getting back his goal-scoring form when he struck a hat-trick against West Ham United on Saturday and after scoring his third goal he uttered the four-letter rant into a TV camera.
Although, the top English striker immediately apologised, but the FA decided to punish him with a two-match ban, which he appealed, but today lost the appeal and now will have to miss two key matches.
Rooney said in a statement issued Thursday, “I am gutted to miss two matches, I am not the first player to have sworn on TV and I won’t be the last. Unlike others who have been caught swearing on camera, I apologised immediately. And yet I am the only person banned for swearing. That doesn’t seem right.”
On the other hand, the FA said in a statement, “Rooney had admitted a charge for the use of offensive, insulting and/or abusive language, but claimed that the automatic penalty of two games was clearly excessive. The Commission did not accept the claim and Rooney will begin the standard two-match suspension with immediate effect.”
Rooney’s club, Manchester United, issued a statement on their website today saying, “Manchester United is clearly very disappointed with the Regulatory Commission’s decision. Wayne Rooney apologised immediately after the match and the club now wishes to move to on to what hopefully will be a very exciting conclusion to the season.”
