Soccer: Premier League: Arsenal open title race with win over United
LONDON: The Arsenal pumped a new life into the English Premier League title race on Sunday when they defeated the visiting Manchester United 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
The defeat has dented Manchester United’s chances to secure their record 19th EPL title as they now have 73 points from 35 matches and their lead has slimmed down to only three points with Chelsea are now on the second position with 70 points. Interestingly, the Manchester United are going to host Chelsea at Old Trafford in a match that is expected to decide the English soccer champions this year.
Arsenal are following at third position with 67 points and Arsene Wenger has already made up his mind of giving up on title hopes but the victory over Manchester United have certainly enhanced their chances to keep hold on their UEFA Champions League berth.
The only goal of the match was scored in the second half, when Aaron Ramsey put fans of not only Arsenal but also of Chelsea on their feet after getting a superb pass by Robin van Persie before putting it on Edwin van der Sar’s corner of the net. The goal was scored in the 56th minute after which Arsenal put all their focus on keeping the ball possession thus frustrating the Red Devils for the rest of the game.
In other matches of the Sunday action, Liverpool continued their upside momentum with 3-0 victory over Newcastle United while Wolverhampton played a drawn game. In the final fixture on Sunday, the Manchester City were taking on West Ham United at Eastlands.
