Soccer: Premier League: Giggs to stay out of Arsenal showdown

LONDON: Ryan Giggs will stay at the benches during Manchester United’s away match against Arsenal on Sunday as boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants to handle his 37-year-old star footballer with some care.

Ryan Giggs played a central role in Manchester United’s victory over Schalke 04 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League 2011 semi-final the other day and Sir Alex Ferguson has already hinted at a regulation policy in using Giggs.

Manchester United are leading the English Premier League points table with 73 points and two out of their last four games are against Arsenal and Chelsea and defeats in these two games can open up the title race once again.

Sir Alex Ferguson has got plenty of options as his star striker this season, Dimitar Berbatov, has recovered from his groin injury while Darren Fletcher is also available and Nani is desperate for a start after he came as a substitute in the Champions League first leg against Schalke 04.

Ryan Giggs might be replaced by the midfielder Anderson who also spent some time in the middle against Schalke the other night as the battle at the Emirates Stadium is gaining more importance.

Talking to reporters here, Sir Alex Ferguson said, “It is a strange thing because Ryan’s peak seems to have lasted so long now. You would think at 37, he would be showing signs of waning. I don’t see any evidence of that. We look after him in terms of rest before games. He won’t be playing on Sunday. He maybe will play next Wednesday. That is the way we have to deal with him now. When he gets that freshness, he doesn’t show any sign of fatiguing at all. He is an amazing man.”
