UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Rooney gives United first leg lead over Chelsea

LONDON: Manchester United earned the most important victory over Chelsea in their first leg away clash of quarter finals of Champions League thanks mainly to their star striker Wayne Rooney who produced a decisive goal to separate the both teams at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

The soccer fans witnessed the excellent soccer as they watched a re-match of final of 2008 Champions League final where Manchester United were emerged as the winners on penalty kicks.

Wayne Rooney had left all the controversies behind and showed excellent form and fitness in the important encounter against the arch rivals Blues. Rooney was served two-match ban The Football Association after he used abusive language in front of the camera in the match against West Ham United on Saturday night.

Chelsea were a little unlucky as well as they were denied clear-cut stoppage-time penalty by Spanish referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco when Patrice Evra chopped down Ramires. Chelsea skipper Cech was furious with the referee decision and said, “Everyone saw what happened — you can see it clearly on the TV — but the most important person (the referee) didn’t see it.”

Sir Alex Ferguson was excited with his team performance and important encounter against the arch rivals Blues. “Wayne was in tremendous form. Excellent, absolutely superb. (His) work rate, desire to play is marvelous. He got a lot of abuse tonight, he got a lot of late tackles on him but he got up and played. It shows the courage of the player. He takes great credit,” Ferguson added.

Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs were also star performers for Sir Alex Ferguson’s Red Devils while goal keeper Edwin van der Sar also played his part and made two excellent saves.

The star studded impotent Chelsea again failed to score as Manchester United took full advantage of their poor goal scoring form. Now Chelsea will look to turn the odds in their favour when they will play second leg of quarter final against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Tuesday April 12.
