Van der Sar looks to end career with Champions League title
LONDON: The veteran Dutch goal keeper of Manchester United Edwin Van der Sar, whose contract with Red Devils is expired, will play his last match for them and it was a big match for the club i.e. UEFA Champions League final against Spanish giant FC Barcelona on Saturday night at Wembley.
Van der Sar has played his farewell match at Old Trafford last Sunday against Blackpool which Man Utd won by 4-2 and also ended their season with record 19th EPL title. The 40-year-old Dutch goal keeper is keen to make contribution in the Saturday’s final against Barca and finished the career as member of the European Champion team.
The Saturday’s Champions League final will be Van der Sar career’s fifth CL final where he ended on the winning side on two occasions while twice he ended up on losing side. The experienced Van der Sar knows the pain of ending up on the losing side and he is keen to finish the career with Champions League title.
“You do think more about things you lose than what you win. When you have won, your medal goes into the cupboard or the safe in the bank. But when you lose, you know something has slipped through your fingers. It makes you more determined,” Van der Sar said.
“If we win I won’t want to go home. If I lose I won’t want to leave home. Maybe it sounds strange but I just wouldn’t want to see anyone. I played a few years at Fulham and remember watching Chelsea’s Champions League matches against Bayern Munich and Barcelona and thinking it would be great to be playing those kinds of games again. Thankfully I have managed to do that at United and it is nice that my final match should be on an occasion such as this,” he added.
