Stoner fastest in Italian MotoGP qualifying session

MILAN: Casey Stoner remained untouchable on Saturday when he proved the fastest in the Italian MotoGP qualifying session which was hit by rains.

Casey Stoner, the world championship leader, was riding Honda and finished the race in just one minute 48.034 seconds to won the 27th pole of his career. It was his fifth pole for the current season as he outpaced the rest at the Mugello Circuit.

Yamaha rider Ben Spies of the United States and Honda rider Marco Simoncelli of Italy will be with Casey Stoner on the front row of the grid as the eighth race of the current season will take place on Sunday.

The qualifying session proved a tough one for the top three riders as Stoner was just half a second faster than the American Spies despite of winning four races in the season. The third fastest finisher, Simoncelli was not far behind Spies, who was racing at Mugello for only second time.

Reigning world champions Jorge Lorenzo, who is yet to win a race this year, will start in fifth whereas Italian rider Valentino Rossi ended 12th.

It is important to mention here that Loris Capirossi of Italy, 38, is not taking part in the Italian MotoGP for the first time in 20 years as he fractured his two ribs last week.

However, the top stars are all in action on Sunday as Rossi’s compatriot Andrea Dovisioso will take the fourth on the grid as he requires victory here to do a world of good to his championship ranking as now he stands third in the championship.
