Stoner overtakes Lorenzo with British GP win
LONDON: The Australian Casey Stoner produced yet another champion performance on Monday morning to dislodge Jorge Lorenzo from top of the MotoGP standings as he won the soggy British Grand Prix here.
The rain emerged as the biggest opponent for the riders as a number of them slipped on the wet track but Casey Stoner kept his nerves and avoided his opponents’ slip-ups to get himself fourth title this year.
Jorge Lorenzo couldn’t keep up pace with Casey Stoner and finally succumbed to the unfriendly conditions at Silverstone thus sliding off on lap 10.
The British Grand Prix victory has taken Casey Stoner 18 points clear of the defending champion Lorenzo as he was racing in his 150th MotoGP race.
With Lorenzo slipping away already, Stoner had no real challenge from anyone else as he won the race with a staggering 15 seconds lead.
Andrea Dovisioso, who was riding in place of an injured DAni Pedrosa, clinched the second position for Honda while American Colin Edwards claimed third position for Yamaha.
Germany’s Stefan Bradl (Kalex) finished first in the Moto2 race out-speeding Britain’s Bradley Smith (Tech3) and Italy’s Michele Pirro (Moriwaki), thus giving a world of good to his position atop the overall standings.
German 17-year-old Jonas Folger (Aprilia) took the honours in the 125cc race, fighting off Frenchman Johann Zarco (Derbi) to claim his first ever Grand Prix victory. His Spanish team-mate Hector Faubel was third.
