WTA Championships: Kvitova sends world number one Wozniacki packing
ISTANBUL: A day after Caroline Wozniacki kept control over the WTA World Number 1 spot, Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic found weariness and weakness in her and drained her out of the competition with a 6-4 6-2 win in the final round-robin match Thursday.
Petra Kvitova once again showed her sheer class as she continued to build a strong reputation among the top seeded players in the WTA circuit and now has entered into the semifinals stage of the WTA Championships.
Petra Kvitova, who won her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon this year, attacked her physically and mentally drained out opponent with full force as the Dane World Number 1 had to get her blood pressure checked after the first set.
Kvitova has marched into the semi-finals with a match to spare in the Red Group and was joined by Victoria Azarenka of Belarus who got the better of French Open champion Li Na in straight sets by 6-2 6-2.
Caroline Wozniacki has had a great year as she won 80 matches, the most by any tennis player, but towards the end of the season she somehow failed to keep her energy level right up there.
Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland almost kicked her Russian opponent Vera Zvonareva out of the competition with a tough 1-6 6-2 7-5 victory in front of the 11,000 crowd who relished the nail-biting encounter to the fullest.
Agnieszka Radwanska has now entered into the last-four stage while Vera Zvonareva is now hoping that Petra Kvitova cruise past Radwanska in straight sets in their final round-robin match to be played Friday.
Talking about her match against Petra Kvitova, the reigning world number one woman tennis player Caroline Wozniacki told media, “Petra played well. I wish I could have been 110 percent but my body just didn’t want to do the things I wanted today. I’ve been feeling a bit tired and to get a little bit sick now, that’s not the best if you want to beat the top players”.
This is the second year in a row that Caroline Wozniacki has ended up being the world number one woman tennis player despite of failing to win even a single Grand Slam title.
Talking about Kvitova, Wozniacki said, “She’s playing very strong tennis, she’s hitting it deep and hard”.
The final semifinalist will decided from the White Group after US Open champion Samantha Stosur of Australia will take on French Open title holder Li Na of China Friday. The winner will take on Victoria Azarenka in the last-four encounter.
Li Na told reporters, “It’s just like a normal tournament now. The winner can go on in the draw and the loser has to go back. It’s tough. Both of us will be fighting a lot.”
