Tiger Woods an absentee at British Open
NEW YORK: Struggling to regain his form, former World Number 1 golf player Tiger Woods of the United States has decided to pull out of the next week’s British Open.
Tiger Woods said Tuesday that he took the decision to get himself rid of the ongoing issues with his left leg which he injured along with Achilles tendon during the US Masters event held in April 2011.
Tiger Woods said in a statement issued here, “Unfortunately, I’ve been advised that I should not play in the British Open. As I stated at the AT&T National, I am only going to come back when I’m 100 percent ready. I do not want to risk further injury”.
Talking further about his efforts to regain fitness, Woods said, “That’s different for me, but I’m being smarter this time. I’m very disappointed and want to express my regrets to the British Open fans.”
Once the world number one, Tiger Woods now is on 17th position in the best golfers’ list of the world as he has only taken part in nine competitive tournaments since the Masters at the Players Championship in Florida a couple of months back.
In a bid to prevent further damage, Woods has been wearing a protective boot but the problems have forced him to withdraw from the US Open, the AT&T and now the British Open.
Woods said, “In hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have competed at The Players, but it’s a big event, and I wanted to be there to support the tour. I’ve got to learn from what I did there and do it right this time and not come back until I’m ready.
Next week’s British Open will be played at Royal St George’s in Sandwich, England.
Woods, 35, stated, “I think my best years are still ahead of me. I’m very confident and optimistic about the future.”
